Easter Rising and WWI

Details
Category: Articles

This article aims to give a view of the Easter Rising and its WWI context that is comprehensive but without being too detailed.  Without WWI the Rising could not have happened!  And there most certainly are Welsh connections - see appendix 4

We have split the article split into nine chapters and four appendices to make it easier for the reader to find their way around.  The chapters are (click on the title to be taken straight there):

1. Introduction - Easter Rising, for Britain, for Ireland, for Germany?

2. A brief overview of the historical context

3. The start of the Rising  - day by day commentary

4. The aftermath - the executions

5. The War of Independence, 1919-1921

6. Political settlements in the North and the South of Ireland

7. Internecine feuding - the civil war in the new Irish Free State and chaos in Belfast and along the border

8. Postscript - where did we end up and what happened to the key figures afterwards?

Appendix 1. Who's who? A description of the key characters of the time

Appendix 2. The Declaration of Independence: text of the declaration

Appendix 3. British army units available at the outbreak of the Rising

Appendix 4. The Welsh aspects: connections between Wales and the events before, during and after the Rising

Appendix 5. The graves - where is everyone buried, and they are not all in Dublin.
